Accidents at Work
Crush injuries are surprisingly common in the manufacturing industry which shows the importance of health and safety training. Just last week there was a case in the news regarding a worker who was crushed while attempting to clear a blockage. Thomasz Hac was operating a machine which shreds scrapped cars so they can be recycled when his machine was blocked. Mr Hac was inside the machine trying to remove a blocked car when it became loose and landed on top of him back in 2009. He was left with a broken shoulder blade, four broken ribs and abdominal crush injuries.
Lack of Safe Systems of Work in Place
When the Health and Safety Executive investigated the accident they discovered that the employer, Donald Ward, had put no safe systems of work in place. Had there been it would have been very unlikely for the incident to have occurred, meaning Donald Ward had not followed the Health and Safety at Work Act, breaching section 2(1) which states that all employers must do everything which will help to ensure the health, safety and welfare of their personnel. As a result of breaching the Health and Safety at Work Act Mr Ward was prosecuted. He pleaded guilty and his company, Ward Recycling, was fined £20,000 and ordered to pay costs amounting to £19,970.
