Accident Highlights Need for Safety Training

Accidents at Work

Crush injuries are surprisingly common in the manufacturing industry which shows the importance of health and safety training. Just last week there was a case in the news regarding a worker who was crushed while attempting to clear a blockage. Thomasz Hac was operating a machine which shreds scrapped cars so they can be recycled when his machine was blocked. Mr Hac was inside the machine trying to remove a blocked car when it became loose and landed on top of him back in 2009. He was left with a broken shoulder blade, four broken ribs and abdominal crush injuries.

Lack of Safe Systems of Work in Place

When the Health and Safety Executive investigated the accident they discovered that the employer, Donald Ward, had put no safe systems of work in place. Had there been it would have been very unlikely for the incident to have occurred, meaning Donald Ward had not followed the Health and Safety at Work Act, breaching section 2(1) which states that all employers must do everything which will help to ensure the health, safety and welfare of their personnel. As a result of breaching the Health and Safety at Work Act Mr Ward was prosecuted. He pleaded guilty and his company, Ward Recycling, was fined £20,000 and ordered to pay costs amounting to £19,970.

Find the Right Health and Safety Training for Your Industry

There are plenty of excellent and affordable health and safety courses offered by the National Examination Board for Eccupational Safety & Health. These NEBOSH courses are aimed at educating employees, supervisors, managers and business owners about their legal duties. One suitable course to consider is the NEBOSH General Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety although there are many others out there to suit your requirements and industry. Candidates who take the course will leave with an abundance of skills and knowledge as well as a recognised qualification. One of the aspects featured on the general certificate is learning how to spot and control hazards and the importance of being responsible by creating safe systems of work. If more companies took their legal responsibilities seriously there would be fewer injuries and less prosecutions going through the courts, resulting in large fines and criminal records. We offer multiple courses by NEBOSH, IOSH, CIEH and more. If you would like to find a suitable health and safety course for you or your employees our team are on hand to help.
