The NEBOSH Diploma in Occupational Health & Safety is the UK’s premier health and safety qualification, designed for those who wish to forge a career in health and safety. More than 18,000 health and safety professionals have completed the Diploma since it was introduced in 1980. Considered the gold standard of health and safety qualifications, it is the highest-level training NEBOSH offers. It is rated at NQF/QCF Level 6 in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, equivalent to SCQF Level 10 in Scotland.

Who is the NEBOSH National Diploma Course Suitable For?

The NEBOSH National Diploma is suitable for health, safety and environmental practitioners who wish to advance their careers. This includes safety managers, advisors and consultants. The Diploma also acts as a stepping-stone to postgraduate study, as many UK MSc programmes accept it as a full or partial entry requirement. While there are no formal entry requirements, before registering for the National Diploma, it is recommended to first completing one of the following courses:
  • NEBOSH General Certificate in Occupational Health & Safety
  • NEBOSH Construction Certificate in Health & Safety

Where Does the Diploma Fit in With Other NEBOSH qualifications?

When combined with further professional development, the NEBOSH National Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety meets the standards required to achieve Chartered Safety Practitioner (CMIOSH) status. It builds directly on the knowledge gained in the NEBOSH General Certificate and the NEBOSH Construction Certificate.

On completion of the NEBOSH Diploma distance learning course, you will be entitled to use “DipNEBOSH” after your name and apply for Graduate Membership with the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (GradIOSH). It also allows full membership to the International Institute of Risk and Safety Management (IIRSM). GradIOSH and IIRSM membership increases your employability with organisations looking for skilled and knowledgeable health and safety personnel.

What Are the Benefits of the NEBOSH Diploma?

The NEBOSH Diploma qualification assists in the development of professional competence, increasing candidates' ability to help organisations manage risk and meet regulatory requirements. The NEBOSH Diploma covers the practical skills that are essential to health and safety professionals. We assess candidates’ ability to apply their knowledge in real-world settings and teach them how to deliver positive change in the workplace.

Learning Format

Distance Learning

The principal advantage of undertaking the NEBOSH Diploma in distance learning format is flexibility. You can study at your own pace, in your own time, and fit the studies around work and other commitments. Furthermore, there is no need to complete the course in one sitting. This makes it straightforward to suspend study then come back to it when convenient.

Course Programme

The NEBOSH National Diploma course consists of three separate assessments: one assignment and two scenario-based case studies:

ND1 – Know – workplace health and safety principles
ND2 – Do – controlling workplace health issues
ND3 – Do – controlling workplace safety issues

Each assessment is a substantial undertaking.

Assessment

The assessments focus on the application of knowledge to help you prepare for the health and safety tasks faced in the workplace.

Each assessment is a substantial undertaking. We anticipate that it will take you around 60 hours to complete the ND1 assignment and 40 hours each for the ND2 and ND3 case studies. The time-period given for you to complete each assessment reflects this:

What does distance learning with Phoenix involve?

This NEBOSH Diploma course has been designed by Phoenix to bridge the gap between traditional distance learning courses and e-learning. The way the programme materials are delivered can be modified to meet the preferences of different students. For example, those who do not wish to use computers can choose a more traditional distance learning style with textbooks, written assignments and telephone support. We would, however, recommend making the most of our online resources. Candidates who are comfortable with online learning have a wide variety of extra support, including:

  • Regular live webinars with a Phoenix tutor discussing Diploma programme content and students joining in the discussion as it happens.
  • Webinars are recorded for other students to watch later.
  • Interactive materials with activities, mind maps and video tutorials.
  • Lists of website links to further reading and related online articles and documents.
  • A Facebook group where Phoenix Health and Safety distance learners can discuss the course and connect.
  • The Phoenix Health and Safety YouTube channel with video clips and presentations.
  • Telephone, email and Skype support from expert tutors.
  • Online revision interactions to test knowledge.

Course Fees

The course fee includes course materials and lifetime access to online client support.
