The recently updated NEBOSH International General Certificate online course is one of the most widely respected health and safety qualifications in the world, currently held by around 90,000 people.

The NEBOSH International General Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety course is ideal if you are a manager, supervisor or employee representative based outside the UK. It is also recommended if you are embarking on a career in health and safety, providing a valuable foundation for further professional study.

What has changed?

The NEBOSH International General Certificate online course content has been restructured and updated to reflect modern health and safety practices and the needs of today’s employers. The course now consists of only two units, with a small reduction in the overall study hours. Another major change is that there is only one exam and one practical assessment.

The NEBOSH IGC is ideal for managers, supervisors and employees with health and safety responsibilities based outside of the UK. If you are based in the UK, we recommend the NEBOSH National General Certificate.

Next Steps

Achieving certification can lead to a choice of NEBOSH qualifications focused on specific industries, such as construction, fire and environmental. After studying the IGC, many candidates progress to the degree-level NEBOSH International Diploma.

Assessment and NEBOSH Certification

The updated course is now assessed by one written exam and one practical exam:

  • Unit IG1 is examined by a formal 2 hour written exam, replacing IGC1.
  • Unit IG2 is assessed by a practical assessment, which is longer than the previous GC3 assessment.

Both assessments are marked by external examiners appointed by NEBOSH. These examiners are chosen for their experience and expertise to ensure that learners are assessed by the very best from our industry.

Exams in the UK take place in:

  • London
  • Birmingham
  • Manchester

If you are outside the United Kingdom, exams take place at British Council offices.

Once the course has been completed, a confirmation of results can be printed or saved as proof of completion. This can then be kept on record or in personal files as evidence that you have completed the training.

The updated course now features one written exam and one practical exam:

  • Unit IG1 (replacing IGC1) includes an Open Book Exam, which you can do from home.
  • Unit IG2 is assessed by a practical assessment, which is longer than the previous GC3 assessment.

What is an Open Book Exam?

An open book exam assesses the same learning outcomes as an invigilated, paper-based exam. With an open book exam, you can have access to textbooks, course notes and the internet.

You can complete an open book exam in your own home, or another suitable location. You will have up to 24 hours to complete the NEBOSH open book exam, but we find that most candidates only take 4 – 5 hours.

The open book exam will assess your ability to apply your knowledge, as well as testing your analytical and critical thinking skills.

What is a closing interview?

Following the open book exam is a short closing interview, which takes approximately 15 minutes. The purpose of the interview is to confirm that the work you have submitted is your own and that you did not have any assistance in completing your NEBOSH assessment.

The closing interview takes place via video call, which you can access via smartphone, tablet or computer.

The interviewer will ask to see identification, you need to provide either your passport, driving license or national identity card. The interviewer needs to see the room that you are in to ensure you don’t have access to notes during the interview.

The interviewer will ask you questions based on your open book exam, your work and your submission.

Your closing interview is not an assessment, so you won’t receive a mark. If the interviewer is happy that the work is your own, your mark will be published in line with NEBOSH timeframes.

External Examiners

External examiners mark all assessments and are appointed by NEBOSH. Each examiner is chosen for their experience and expertise, ensuring candidates are assessed by the best in our industry.

This qualification is accredited by the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH), as well as the International Institute of Risk and Safety Management (IIRSM).

E-learning Study Method

What are the benefits of online learning?

Flexibility is the great advantage of e-learning. You can enrol at any time and study whenever you wish at the pace you choose.

Our online courses are designed to keep you engaged and motivated with interactive content comprising quizzes and videos.

Courses can be accessed via computer, tablet or mobile devices. The system bookmarks the point you have reached, so you can stop studying whenever you wish, and pick up exactly where you left off.

Experts write all the course materials and create them for multiple formats. You can view them as online PDFs (read online or download for offline study) or download as audiobooks.

Support is readily available from expert health and safety tutors, who can be contacted by telephone or email for study, revision and exam advice. You also have access to a unique Facebook group, which is a great way to discuss any aspects of your studies with tutors and fellow students.

To help you prepare you for your final assessments, we provide tutor-marked mock assessments with feedback.

What is the benefit of e-learning for employers?

Employers have a legal duty to ensure that staff have received the necessary health and safety training. E-learning enables them to do so at a fraction of the cost of face-to-face training. We also conduct monitored training delivery, so employers can receive reports on who has completed the training and how they scored.

Alternatives to e-learning

We also offer the NEBOSH International General Certificate via distance learning.

Pass Rate

The pass rate for this course is above industry average, and our candidates often achieve a high number of credits and distinctions.

When studying via e-learning or distance learning you don’t pay for your exam(s) upfront — you choose your preferred exam dates and pay later directly with the training provider after you’ve booked the course.
